Title:The Living Archive of Aboriginal Languages
Bibliographic Citation:Bow, Cathy, Bow, Cathy; 2015-02-27; The Living Archive of Aboriginal Languages (www.cdu.edu.au/laal) is an open access, online repository comprising digital versions of materials produced in Australian Indigenous languages of the Northern Territory. It currently contains over a thousand resources in more than 25 languages and continues to expand. The archive was initially developed to preserve the thousands of items produced in bilingual education programs in remote schools across the NT which were becoming lost, damaged and destroyed due to the withdrawal of funding and support for bilingual education. A further stage of development sees the expansion of the collection to include other resources from outside bilingual programs, as well as encouraging engagement with the materials. The digitised materials (stored on servers at Charles Darwin University Library) can be accessed through the online map interface as well as standard search and browse options, and can be viewed online or downloaded as pdfs and text files. The website also includes information encouraging visitors to engage with the materials in the archive and suggesting ways of connecting interested users with the language authorities in the communities of origin. A blog and social media strategy also invite collaboration and engagement.; Kaipuleohone University of Hawai'i Digital Language Archive;http://hdl.handle.net/10125/25366.
