Bibliographic Citation: | Weka Du'a, Danerek, H. Stefan, Danerek, H. Stefan, Danerek, H. Stefan; 2015-06-25; Genre: Medicine/huru: On my second real, 3-4 days, stay in kampong (and domain) Ko'a I was able to record Weka Dhu'ane again (see also 11 June -15, 'huru sau, huru pou'). This is Weka Dhu'ane's 'huru haphi' ("huru fire/kesambi") and 'huru hatu'. Weka does not make 'huru' prohibitions-curses. She only cures according to the symptoms. And Poke Dhu'ane helps her with 'bhaga', to find out what or whose 'huru' the affliction corresponds to. Symptoms of 'huru hatu' is liver disease, liver ache that spreads upwards, it rises from the liver and up, if bad, to the head, and then death is near. 'Huru hatu' uses chewed areca nut and piper betel, lime ,+ 'hule mila' leaf and soil. The 'hule' leaf is moved down and up five times fromapprox. chest to navel (see mp4). 'Huru haphi' has spread symptoms; aching inside, arms, lips, all over. 'Huru haphi' uses chewed areca nut and piper betel, and 'wewe' (bean). It is put where it hurts, and can be swallowed too. Doctor's cannot cure the diseases even with injections. After putting the chewed mixture, she utters 'bhulu wa'o', an adat prayer that commands the disease to disappear. From c 08:45 to 10:15 there is talk about different 'bhije' (haram) concerning food; patient, them generally etc. First I thought the recording should end here, but it goes on for four more minutes. From c. 10:15 to 11.51 we talk about the future use of the recording. In the last one and a half minute Weka and Poke add a detail about the curing process; a 'hule mila' leaf is crushed in the end, in one's hand, and then it is pressed to the forehead and downwards, and then the leaf is thrown away ('nawu kao', like 'siko') together with the food stuff ( I think it happens at the same time). And some example of the 'bhulu ba'o' for the closeure of the treatment. See also video clips and pictures. Recorded in the home of lakimosa Sundu, sitting together with Poke bagane (who assists with 'baga' measuring with handslength across the body to see if something is true), with the AT2020 mic in the morning 25 June -15. Sundu's wife Methi is heard from the kitchen behind, cooking or doing other things, also the kids are heard from the back. The mp4-file contains 'baga', bhulu ba'o' and a short note on 'huru hatu, how Weka touches the patient with the 'hule mila' leaf before applying the chewed soil. See also SD1-274 for PDF with images and jpeg-portratit of Weka and Poke.; digital wav file recorded at 48 khz/24 bit, eaf file, photos pdf file; Kaipuleohone University of Hawai'i Digital Language Archive;http://hdl.handle.net/10125/47849. | |
