Description: | SUK1 got together with HGS1 to collect some data on a typically Jejuan modal expression that consists of a verb suffixed with -mt͡ɕik, and to test in what morphosyntactic contexts these verb forms occur, and whether there are semantic restrictions to what verbs can be suffixed. Based on Vendler's verb classification, he discusses a range of verb forms with HGS1, and sees whether she can make sense of them. At the end of the session, he also tries out different negated forms, with HGS1 saying that some suggestions sound more 'Standard Korean' than Jejuan. This construction is particularly interesting, as in Korean it is not productive anymore, and it is only regularly used with the verb mək-, 'eat', thus məkɨmt͡ɕik sʰɨləpta means 'to look edible/tasty'. In Jejuan however, it can be used with almost all verbs except for the copula, so for example, pi ola-mt͡ɕik həuta, rain come-MOD do.POL.DECL means 'it looks like it's going to rain/it's probably going to rain'.
This project aims at building an annotated audio-video corpus of spoken Jejuan with a focus on conversational genres, supplementing existing documentation of narratives and songs.
