Description: | The Negidal names of the months with some explanation of why they are called this way. Recording done in the living room of Daria Ivanovna's house, where BP and DIN had been working. The recording was very spontaneous – BP had gone to DIN's house not even knowing whether they would work, since DIN's mother had been very ill in the past days. So BP came unprepared and hadn't brought the video camera. Somehow we started talking about how to dry fish to prepare it for winter, and from that we came to the names of the months, and Daria Ivanovna told the names of the summer months in Negidal, and then went for the primer that she had co-authored for children who don’t speak Negidal. So we decided to record the names of the months in Negidal, instead of my just writing them down, and DIN additionally read the little texts that go with each month in the primer and also added some things of her own – in Negidal and Russian. During the recording, only BP and DIN were in the room.
Recorded with a Marantz PMD660 solid state recorder and an AKG 1000 S microphone, in mono. It should be noted that the battery of the microphone was apparently already weak, so the sound is on the weak side. Recorded and transcribed by Brigitte Pakendorf. Transcription checked and Russian translation provided by Daria Nadeina in February 2017. Glossed by Brigitte Pakendorf and questions clarified with Daria Nadeina. In addition, we are depositing two photos as illustrations for "January" (tree stump with snow cap) and "March" (thawed patch).
Негидальские названия месяцев с кратким объяснением их значения.
This project focuses on the documentation of Negidal, a highly moribund Northern Tungusic language spoken by at most a handful of individuals on the Amgun’ and Lower Amur rivers in the Russian Federation. The language comprises two dialects, Upper and Lower Negidal, of which the latter might already be extinct. The project will result primarily in an extensive corpus of interlinearized texts from the Upper dialect together with accompanying audio recordings.
