Description: | Leo and his wife Teresa talk about the traditions surrounding a woman's first childbirth. It is only recently that people have stopped practicing these traditions. The pregnant woman would be given a doll made from a coconut, and another woman would cut her hair. Meanwhile, other women would mimic the sexual behaviour of a married couple. All these women would have specific clan affiliations. The other women would then show the pregnant woman how to give birth. They would show her how to cope with the pain, and tell her not to twist her body too much and not to shout too much. Teresa herself experienced this tradition. The women could take anything from the pregnant woman's house and she would give them additional gifts. The women would also cook at the pregnant woman's house. When the woman's hair had been cut, the coconut doll would be broken open and eaten. Once the first child had been born, this tradition would not be repeated for subsequent pregnancies. | |
