Description: | This video along with TB25 (Sisma Andrew: What is the meaning of the word Hatohobei), TB26 (Sisma Andrew: the custom of hoho), TB28 (Nixon Andrew: Typhoon Haiyan), TB29 (Nixon Andrew: Message to faraway daughter), and TB30 (Sisma Andrew: message to granddaughter), was made as part of a training session with Nixon Andrew, one of the people who expressed interest in recording material for this project during the months the Blacks were not in Palau. Barbara Black filmed this event. Also present were Peter W. Black, David Tibbetts, Nixon’s mother Sisma Andrew, her sister Regina Andrew, and Sisma’s daughter, Carcia. Sisma tells the story of Manmeiyouh (sometimes spelled Manimeiyough). The story tells of a navigator named Manmeiyouh who found Helen Reef and brought news of its many fish and giant clams back to Tobi. The transcription and translation of this story by Peter W. Black is included here as tb27-04129-nab-2013-11-10.pdf. Also included here at tb27-04127-nab-2013-11-10.pdf is the story of Manimeiyough—The Last Navigator of Tobi (from the Fishing Lore of Tobi by Peter W. Black, 1968) (http://www.friendsoftobi.org/tobithings/fishing/fishinglore/lastnavigator.htm). Recorded: 2013-11-10.
Documenting Ramari Hatohobei (literally the Tobian language of Tobi), a severely endangered Micronesian language. Tobi is one of the Southwest Islands of the Republic of Palau, a Micronesian nation in the western Pacific. Severely endangered, Tobian is currently spoken by approximately 150 people. Tobian and the dialects of Sonsorol, Merir, and Pulo Anna, the other three Southwest Islands, are closely related to the languages spoken in the outer islands of Yap and Chuuk.
