| Description: | Esta sesión fue grabada en un viaje desde Río Gallegos a Puerto San Julián (3hs30m en cada sentido) para visitar la réplica de la nave de Magallanes y para compartir con Dora Manchado la historia de la llegada de los europeos a la Patagonia y el ‘encuentro’ con su gente, los patagones o tehuelches en 1520. El uso de la lengua es extremadamente limitado. Dora casi no había querido usarla aquel día, y no quisimos forzarla. Por otro lado, al llegar a Piedrabuena (mitad de camino), no quiso seguir viaje. Si bien después cambió de opinión, no quiso bajarse del auto al llegar a la costanera de San Julián. Creemos – sobretodo con la distancia del tiempo – que estaba emocionada. Cuando, finalmente, aceptó y llegamos junto a la Nao Victoria le pedimos que nos dijera las frases que habíamos preparado. La conversación tiene mucho de sensacionalista, y algo de absurdo. Por ejemplo, insistimos mucho con la idea de los “tehuelches gigantes”, un estereotipo que nació precisamente en ese lugar, difundido por el cronista de la expedición de Magallanes. Lo que en realidad queríamos era mostrar a Dora algunos dibujos de patagones, y confrontarlos con la realidad de sus descripciones. La emoción fue más fuerte esta vez y sólo atinamos a hacer unos pocos comentarios. La compañía de Paulo Hidalgo fue también altamente simbólica, porque es ése precisamente el nombre que fue elegido para el cautivo que los europeos se llevaron consigo, y que dictó las primeras palabras en lengua tehuelche a un europeo – el cronista italiano, Antonio Pigafetta. No teníamos todavía un buen control de la cámara en viaje, ni del micrófono. La calidad del audio y del video es bastante mala. This session is a trip by car from Río Gallegos to Puerto San Julián to visit the copy of Magellan's ship and to share with the speaker the story of the first arrival of Europeans to Patagonia and the "encounter" of her people, the Tehuelche. It is a trip from Río Gallegos to San Julián (3hs30 each way) to visit an emblematic place for the Patagonian population - for the "qade" (white or European) but, above all, for the Tehuelche. It is in this place where, in 1520, Europeans met the local people for the first time. The use of the Tehuelche language is extremely limited. Dora did almost not use it that day, and we did not want to force her. On the other hand, when bequeathing Piedrabuena (half of the trip), Dora refused to continue. Although she later changed his mind, she then did not want to get off when we reached the coast of San Julián. We assume as it is probably easy to see, that she was also deeply moved. When finally, she accepted to get off the car and we arrived near the Nao Victoria we ask her to tell us the phrases we had prepared. The whole conversation is somehow absurd and we made huge mistakes. For example, we insisted a lot with the idea of the "Patagonian giants" because we had prepared a series of drawings that were supposed to serve to discredit that legend. The emotion was stronger this time and we couldn't show her the drawings. The company of Paulo Hidalgo was also highly symbolic, because that was the name that the Portuguese chose for the captive they took, and that dictated the first words of the Tehuelche language to a European, the Italian Pigafetta. We still hadn't a good control of the camera, neither of the microphone. The quality of audio and video is quite poor. | |

| Paulo Hidalgo is the son of Dora Manchado's closest friend. He participates very actively in the language reclamation project. He participated in the Grant application. His abilities with drawings was very useful for the recreation of some situations for the elicitation session. | ||
