Description: | Audio in Tinigua. Sixto talks about the hostile relationship of the Tinigua and the Carijona groups. This is a narrative that, according to Sixto, was told to him by his grandfather, who witnessed the event when the Carijonas had passed through Tiniguan territory and killed and ate several Tiniguas. The Tiniguas retaliated and found the group of Carijonas, killed them all but one young woman, who was taken as wife by a Tinigua. Everyone in the village were suspicious of her and knew that at some point she was going to end up killing and eating someone from the village. She did. Killed her own born baby, and ate its brains. The Tinigua women in the village killed her too./Sixto cuenta sobre la relación hostil entre los Tinigua y los Carijona.
Tinigua [ISO 639-3:tit] is the last surviving member of an independent South American Tiniguan family whose other (two?) members have disappeared without substantial documentation; with only one remaining speaker, it is now critically endangered. Additionally, the language is seriously underdocumented and underdescribed. This project aims to provide a linguistic documentation of Tinigua through work with Sixto Muñoz, its last remaining speaker. The expected outcomes of this project are a transcribed, translated and annotated audio-visual corpus of the language, a grammatical description, and a lexicon. Additionally, I aim to gather further historical and cultural data on the Tiniguan culture.
