Description: | This recording contains two short humorous Chatino stories in sequence. The first is the story of the mouse and the scorpions. A mouse comes by the nest of a scorpion family where the babies await the return of their mother, who has gone out to get shoots and sprouts (chi kojo7) for them to eat. Kojo7 is also the potential form of the verb 'to sting'. The mouse then laughs at the children and says “chi kojo7 chi kojo7 kiya7 xike!e_&7e_&7 'sprouts!”, sting the bottom of my balls!'. The babies report this frightening episode to their mother upon her return. She tracks down the mouse and crawls under the debris where he is resting and stings him good in the bottom of the balls. He screams dancing down the hill. The second tale, a crab watches as a firefly and then a mouse pass by. He compliments them comparing them to a comet and a muscular tiger, respectively. A fox lurks listening and wondering what compliment the crab will give him if he passes. He goes, and the crab insults him, calling him 'dark-ass fox, black-ass fox'. The fox threatens to throw the crab in the fire, but the crab is even craftier, convincing the fox that he was forged in fire and his worst fate would be to get thrown into the water. The fox falls for it. He throws the crab into the pond, where the crab them taunts him some more.Audio duration [00:05:38] | |
