| Description: | In this tale a couple has a child, and a snake that lives nearby also has a child. Every morning, when the family wakes up there is a pile of money near the child. The parents realize that the young snake is the child's tono (animal spirit companion). They discuss it, and a neighbor, who is a sorcerer, overhears. Out of jealousy he kills the snake. The mother snake hitches a ride out of town with a Mixtec headed for Santa Ana. The snake goes to live in the marsh up the mountain there. The snake is connected to a tree in Santa María that used to fill with pure white flowers on August 15th, the day of the patron saint festival. Since the snake has been gone, the tree now always has flowers and the community suffers terribly from lack of water.
